Over 600 years old, Zia Pueblo is located next to the Jemez Mountains, about halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe in Northern New Mexico. Its sun symbol is also known by many as the inspiration behind the New Mexico state flag. According to Wikipedia: The State Flag of New Mexico has a modern interpretation of an ancient symbol of a sun design as seen on a late 19th century water jar from Zia Pueblo. This pueblo is thought to have been one of the Seven Golden Cities of Cíbola, which explorer Vásquez de Coronado sought.
This polychrome OLLA, or water jar, was made by a Zia artist in the early 1900s. The vessel form is remarkable, making fine use of a smaller-than-usual base and a slightly extended neck/rim. The beautifully round curves achieved at the shoulder and into the neck suggest an experienced and highly skilled potter.
The painted designs are similarly appealing. Birds, plants, and a number of triangle and diamond elements appear, circling the exterior in lively energy and playful interaction without sacrificing the elegance that Zia pottery is known for. The artist used four colors, augmenting the typical red, cream, and black with a beautiful orange tone. A rich patina enhances the appeal of the colorful designs. This is a remarkable example of historic Zia Pueblo pottery.
Condition: excellent condition, light abrasions from handling and some material accumulated on exterior, but no restoration or repair
Provenance: this Historic Four-Color Zia Pueblo Polychrome OLLA is from a private collection
