This historic Cochiti raccoon effigy pitcher was crafted by an unknown Cochiti Pueblo potter, likely in the 1930s. The raccoon, an uncommon motif in Pueblo pottery, adds a unique and decorative twist to this ceremonial-style pitcher. The design of this piece is reminiscent of earlier works from the 1880-1900 period, characterized by their spherical forms. During that era, Cochiti Pueblo potters were known for creating jars, bowls, canteens, and figurines with rounded shapes. The development of canteen-like vessels, which featured round bodies and openings at the top, was a particularly innovative form that emerged at Cochiti Pueblo.
This effigy pitcher is sculpted in the form of a raccoon, with its mouth open and a single arched handle running along its spine. The raccoon motif holds cultural significance for the Cochiti people, who associate the animal with resourcefulness and adaptability. In Cochiti stories, the raccoon is sometimes seen as a trickster figure, embodying intelligence and survival skills, qualities that resonate with the Pueblo's own adaptability and creativity.
The craftsmanship of this vessel reflects the skill of its creator. The form is even and well-balanced, with a stable, flat base. This effigy pitcher is not only a rare and imaginative piece but also one that captures the spirit and artistry of Cochiti Pueblo potters.
