Some of the most spectacular Acoma pottery is rendered in black on white. This is an extraordinary one that is technically classified as polychrome because of the red underbody but the design was rendered only in black on white. It was formed from native clay with ground pottery shard temper, rag-wiped white slip on which the design was painted, red neck interior, and red-slipped underbody with concave base.
The point of maximum diameter just above the center of the vessel, the structured design elements and the short, graceful neck, make this a visual delight. The rim top and framing lines are worked in mineral black, and do not have ceremonial line breaks. The fine line and geometric/curvilinear elements are mineral black on rag-wiped white slip. The jar dates to circa 1940s.
Condition: One insignificant interior rim chip has been glued back in place. No other repairs.
Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Arizona
