Garreth Polingyumptewa, Hopi-Tewa Potter

Artist signature of Garreth Polingyumptewa, Hopi-Tewa Potter

This is the second of three pottery tiles consigned to us that were made by Hopi-Tewa artist Garreth Polingyumptewa. One other is already posted on our website, and the third one will be posted soon. All of them are thin clay tiles with rounded edges. The artist arranged a beautiful layout of designs on each.

The triangular design that crosses the tile from edge to edge contains bold geometric elements with three domed unpainted sections, each with a painted green dot. Above one leg of the triangle are more domed designs with green dots. Adjacent to another leg of the triangle are black triangles, each with a green painted dot. Below are parallel lines and a hook element with painted green pigment adjacent.

The tile is signed on the back with the artist's name, a paw, and the year 2002 Hopi.

Garreth Polingyumptewa, a distinguished artist from the Hopi-Tewa community of Hopi Pueblo, has carved a niche for himself in the realm of pottery. His craftsmanship is particularly celebrated for the creation of exquisitely thin pottery tiles. These tiles serve as a canvas for Polingyumptewa's artistic expression, where he masterfully paints traditional designs that echo the rich cultural heritage of his community. His work not only showcases his individual talent but also pays homage to the enduring legacy of Hopi-Tewa artistry.
