Made with an exceptionally deep red, robust coral, this necklace is a striking piece which commands immediate attention. The robustly colored coral, while bold, is also quite soothing to the eye. It brings a calmness upon viewing and likely will do so even more for the wearer. The coral has a beautiful, polished finish.

Today, high quality coral is extremely rare. Demand from Chinese consumers and over harvesting have led to scarcity of the popular jewelry element. One of the most desired components of Southwestern jewelry, coral is technically not a stone: it is the skeletal remains of a sea animal that lives in warm waters. Navajo and Pueblo jewelers were first introduced to coral by the early Spanish traders who had obtained it from Mediterranean fishermen off the coast of Spain. Fascinated by the deep color, artisans began integrating coral into their jewelry.

This necklace features what is known as a Pueblo wrap, which differs from the commonly used silver clasp on most of the Diné coral necklaces. The Pueblo wrap is a cotton string wrapped around and coiled tightly.
