This is a humble, but incredibly graceful Nacimiento made by Judy Lewis of Acoma Pueblo, and it features simply Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus in front of a beautiful and traditional large, white, stepped backdrop. The figures are each depicted very joyfully and feature customary Acoma designs. The backdrop has a star atop the center, perhaps symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem which is said to have appeared at the birth of Jesus.
The bottom of the manger is signed Judy Lewis, Acoma, NM.
Judy Lewis, born in 1966 at Acoma Pueblo, is a descendant of Katherine Lewis, one of two Lewis families at Acoma known for creating fine pottery. She is the sister of Marilyn Ray and Rebecca Lucario. She learned to make pottery from her sister, Marilyn, and she hand coils and pinches the figures and uses only traditional Acoma materials for clay and paints. Clay figures by Judy Lewis are painted with precise detail and have a joyful, whimsical appeal.
