"Harvest Time in New Mexico" is a sculpture by Nez Perce artist Doug Hyde. It is a gorgeous depiction in bronze of a pueblo woman gathering corn. She is seated in a chair next to her bountiful harvest, wearing traditional pueblo attire and holding a basket full of shucked ears of corn.
Hyde's work with this bronze is excellent. His subject's serene facial expression is highlighted by a smooth, lustrous treatment, which appears only on the woman's skin. Elsewhere, Hyde executed interesting textural treatments, adding depth and variation to each element. The harvest appears as a jagged, gnarled form, offering much to the viewer who chooses to explore its peaks and valleys. The woman is depicted in a gentle, beautiful manner, with softer textures interacting beautifully with the light. These two disparate treatments balance each other out perfectly, resulting in a complex, impressive sculpture.
The bronze is signed D. Hyde and numbered 1/21.
Doug Hyde is an artist with Nez Perce, Assiniboine, and Chippewa ancestry.
