Vernida Polacca Nampeyo, Hopi-Tewa Potter

Artist signature of Vernida Polacca Nampeyo, Hopi-Tewa PotterThis very low jar by Hopi-Tewa artist Vernida Polacca Nampeyo has a wide shoulder on which the painter could excel in her ideas. Vernida has stated that the Hopi migration pattern is her favorite, however, we think this one, with its amazing arrangement of designs, is unique and shows her artistic creativity. Many members of the Nampeyo family excel at painting the migration pattern, but Vernida here illustrates her ability to leave the comfort of a single style and delve into something unique to her talents.

Encircling the area just below the opening of the jar is a group of moth figures, each separated from its neighbor by a block of geometric designs. Below that design panel is a 1-½-inch band of amazing traditional Sikyatki designs encircling the mid body of the jar. Both upper and lower designs are contained within framing lines—a wide one and three thin ones at the top, and a thin one and wide one at the bottom.

Vernida Polacca Nampeyo is the great-granddaughter of Nampeyo, granddaughter of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo, and daughter of Harold and Alice Polacca. She has been an active potter since 1979 and says that the migration pattern is one of her favorites. She says she enjoys painting intricate lines as it relaxes her.
