Contemporary Ledger Drawing “The Buffalo Hunt” [R]

The Certificate of Authenticity for this item states the following: “Native American Indian School (19^th/20^th Century) The Buffalo Hunt.  Colored pencil ledger drawing.  6-5/8 x 8-1/2 in. (168 x 216 mm). Sheet Size: 7-1/2 x 12-1/16 in. (190 x 360 mm).  Few scattered foxing marks, minor handling marks and paper loss at lower edge.

“The consignor inherited the drawings from his father, who was in the medical corps during WWII.  He was on a hospital type troop train that transported wounded soldiers across the US, going through the Midwest.  At a number of stops along the route the Native Americans would offer the drawings for sale, and that is where his father acquired them.  We catalog them as 19^th/20^th Century because they could be 19^th century, but we don’t warrant that.  We do warrant they are pre-1945 for sure.” Martin Gordon Auctions, LLC, September 22, 2007.
