At 84 years of age, Felecita Eustace is still working making storyteller figurines, using all native materials and firing in the traditional outdoor firing process. She told me that she still has clay that her husband, Ben, gathered for her years ago so she doesn't have to worry about digging clay at this time. She is so small and petit, probably less than 100 pounds, that I hope she does not ever have to dig clay.
When her grandson brought her to the gallery on July 7th with this storyteller figurine, she said to me "You remember my grandson. He was only this tall (using her hand) the last time you saw him. Now he is so big." Her grandson, smiling, then said "She is just getting smaller so I look bigger to her."
This seated female has eight children clamoring all over her. One holds a drum and one a pot. One boy holds his hands over his ears as if he doesn't want to hear the story she is telling. The figurine is very well done and it is nice to see that Felecita is still able to make them.
Condition: Original excellent condition.
Provenance: Directly from the potter.
