Rita Lewis, the daughter of famous potter Ascencion Banada, married Ivan Lewis, son of famous potter Lucy Lewis. Together they started making pottery bowls and animal figurines around 1971, and storyteller figurines around 1973.
This turtle figurine is signed only with the name of Rita Lewis so it was probably made by Rita alone as she and Ivan co-signed pottery they jointly made. It is the only Mother Turtle figurine by Rita that I recall ever seeing. We have never had one in the gallery before in our 37 year history.
