This nacimiento consists of thirteen individual items—they are Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus, Three Wise Men, three visitors, an angel, and three animals. Mary and Joseph are dressed in traditional Pueblo attire and Joseph has a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. Baby Jesus has a blanket draped across him as he rests in the cradle. The Three Kings or Wise Men carry gifts of a plate, a jar and a rectangular container. The animals are a donkey with extremely long ears, a cow lying down and a buffalo or bison. The Angel has her hands clasped and her eyes closed.
The set is a wonderful representation by a Cochiti Pueblo potter named Josie Hand. Josephine “Josie” Hand was born on September 17, 1932 in Cochiti Pueblo to her parents Paul and Felipa Trujillo. She married George Hand from the state of Texas. She was known for making pottery figurines - to include storytellers, nacimientos – or Nativity scenes. Josie Hand passed away on January 3, 2013.
