This Southwest Indian Pottery adult female storyteller figurine wears the traditional Cochiti Pueblo dress that is over one shoulder and under the other. She wears a coral necklace and the high-top white traditional moccasins. One child carries a jar, one a dog, one a drum, one covers her ears and one covers his mouth.
Cochiti Pueblo had a long history of producing figurative pottery. It reached its prime in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century.
There was a strong revival in the early 1970s with the production of storyteller figurines. Some potters at Cochiti expanded beyond storyteller figurines. Mary Martin (1927-2011) was one of them. Mary is related to the following artists: Stephanie Rhoades - Snowflake Flower and Ada Suina (cousins).
