Prior to the 1800s, it was believed that the ruins being excavated in Northern Mexico were those of the Aztec Indians. Further study by the late 1800s concluded that the spectacular ruins were directly ancestral to Pueblo people of the Greater Southwest. The large pueblo village of Paquimé was a trade center for trade with those people and those north of them, which is now New Mexico.
Effigy vessels such as this one are quite similar to 19th- and 20th-century effigy vessels from Cochiti Pueblo. Animals and birds predominate the style in both cultures. This effigy vessel appears to be a bird as evidenced by the head, wings and tail.
Condition: excellent condition for a vessel of this age. It is possible that the bird's head has been broken off and re-attached.
Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
