Dextra is one of the most innovative and creative potters of the Nampeyo family. She has made vessels with traditional Sikyatki designs in the tradition of her great-grandmother, Nampeyo of Hano, and she has made very unusual experimental designs of her own. She has never been afraid to experiment with shapes, designs, and even firing techniques. As a result, she has established herself as a master ceramicist.
The design on this vessel is that of the traditional contemporary version of the Sikyatki Migration pattern. It encompasses the entire body of the vessel. Above that there is no design.
It is no mystery that Dextra is one of the finest potters on the Hopi Reservation. This wedding vessel exemplifies the beauty of the Sikyatki polychrome wares of her ancestors. It was constructed in the traditional manner, using native clay and the coiling technique, and painted using mineral paints.
The vessel is signed Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo on the underside. Some of the signature has worn off but enough remains to determine her full name.
Condition: The wedding vessel is in original excellent condition with the normal expected wear patterns.
