Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

This small globular jar is a captivating example of the celebrated Black-on-black pottery, a style that has become synonymous with the Southwest. It represents the masterful collaboration between Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez and her husband, Julián Martinez, both pivotal figures in Pueblo pottery. Maria's skill is evident in the jar's graceful form, while Julian's intricate exterior designs, particularly the wide feather motif, pay homage to the Mimbres patterns that inspired him. The jar's bottom half is polished to a near gunmetal finish, highlighting the Martinez's expertise in technique and innovation.

Signatures of husband wife team: Maria and Julian Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo Four finely painted bands encircle the vessel, emphasizing the feather design that extends elegantly from the opening down the collar. The condition of the jar is excellent, showing only minimal wear typical of early pieces but no major damage or restoration, making it a well-preserved example of their collaborative artistry. Signed Marie + Julian, this jar is a testament to their groundbreaking discovery in 1918 of the Black-on-black pottery technique, which they perfected over the years for collectors and museums worldwide.

Maria, known as "Pond Lily" of San Ildefonso Pueblo, is one of the most renowned Pueblo potters, and her work—along with that of her husband—left a lasting legacy. Julian, who passed away in 1943, was instrumental in the couple's artistic achievements. Following his death, Maria continued collaborating with other family members, including their son Popovi Da, who worked with her until his own passing in 1971. Maria's contributions to Pueblo pottery continued through her large body of work and the generations of potters she inspired, including her grandson Tony Da.
