In the early days of their collaborative work on black pottery, Maria signed only her name, leaving off Julian’s name, even though he painted the designs for her. At that time, pottery was woman’s work and it was not considered necessary, or even desirable, to add a man’s name as a collaborator. It was only after it was explained to Maria that painting by Julian did not consist of making pottery and therefore it was acceptable to give him credit by adding his name.
This jar is signed only with the name Marie, an indication that it was made between 1923 and 1925 as it was around 1925 that Maria added Julian’s name to their work. Maria was from San Ildefonso Pueblo.
The design is typical of Julian’s early design styles, consisting of geometric figures. It was later when he started producing Mimbres feather designs and painting the Avanyu on much pottery. His earlier works were more unique and creative.
Condition: the jar is in remarkable condition, with no visible faults.
Provenance: from the collection of a family from Pennsylvania
