The Baca Legacy: Alvin Baca's Mastery of the Ribbed Melon Jar Technique

Artist siganture of Alvin Baca, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Crafted by Alvin Baca, the son of Angela Baca, the acclaimed originator of the "ribbed melon jar" technique, this black vase is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Baca family's unique pottery style. The vase showcases the distinctive ribbed impressions that are a hallmark of this technique, each one meticulously uniform. These impressions encircle the vase, starting from the base and extending upwards to about an inch and a half from the top.

The vase's design is further enhanced by its elegant curvature near the mouth, which transitions into a smooth surface around the top. This seamless blend of textures adds a layer of sophistication to the piece. The vase's condition is near flawless, reflecting the high standards of craftsmanship associated with the Baca family. The slip of the vase is finely polished, adding a lustrous finish that enhances its overall appeal. This piece is not just a vase, but a tribute to the mastery of the "ribbed melon jar" technique pioneered by Angela Baca and skillfully carried forward by her son, Alvin Baca.

The vase is signed on the bottom Alvin Baca.

A member of a well-known pottery family from Santa Clara Pueblo, Alvin Baca was born in 1966 and is recognized for his ribbed style bowls, pots, pipes, vases, and more. He is the son of Angela Baca, and grandson of Severa and Cleto Tafoya. The Tafoyas have a long history of creating beautiful pieces at Santa Clara.
