Having seen only silver jewelry from the artistic hands of Apache artist Jan Loco, it was a complete surprise to see an item by her that contained turquoise. Apparently in the late 1980s, she made a variety of styles of jewelry before settling down to work only in silver. This rare, early bolo is a marvelous example of Jan Loco’s creative approach. The image is a variant of an Apache Gaan Dancer, most likely, with a large beautiful turquoise gemstone as the body and a smaller matched gemstone as the head. The fan on the head is textured silver. The two turquoise gemstones are outlined with a silver frame. The cord she selected is a weave of black and white strands with horsehair tips.
When Jan Loco moved from California to New Mexico, she apparently settled in or near the small village of Pie Town, which is in New Mexico's largest county, home of the Gila National Forest, the Apache National Forest, and the Cibola National Forest. Later she settled in Santa Fe and settled into making exquisite jewelry.
Condition: new condition
Provenance: this Jan Loco Silver and Turquoise Figural Bolo was an early creation by Jan Loco, around 1988, especially for the Santa Fe resident who is the current owner.
