"Anticipating a Blessing" is an original painting by Margarete Bagshaw. It was completed in 2005, using oil paints on canvas. Bagshaw is known to have drawn from a deep well of influences, including her notable Santa Clara ancestors, New Mexico's Transcendental Painting Group, Bauhaus artists, and the cubist movement. These influences appear in subtle ways within the abstract forms of "Anticipating a Blessing."
Viewers with an eye for pueblo symbology might see a mask, kiva steps and storm elements with the image, but none of these forms are sharply defined. Rather, they float within and around a complex composition, appearing only to those who search for them. Bagshaw's palette of bright orange, pink and yellow tones is enriched by a striking blue, which washes over much of the image and enhances its depth. A gentle sense of motion is conveyed to the viewer through both form and color, resulting in a piece that grabs and holds one's attention.
The painting is signed and dated MB Tindel 05 in lower right. It is framed in a thick black frame. The following text is handwritten on the wood backing: ‘Anticipating a Blessing,' Oil on canvase [sic], Margarete Bagshaw Tindel 2005.
Margarete Bagshaw (November 11, 1964 - March 19, 2015) was a painter who was descended from the Tewa people of K'apovi or the Kha'p'oo Owinge, Santa Clara Pueblo. Her mother was Helen Hardin, and her grandmother was Pablita Velarde, which places her within an important family of talented and influential women artists. Bagshaw received much acclaim and recognition during her career. Her works and those of her ancestors remain incredibly popular among today's collectors. Bagshaw passed away in 2015.
