Acoma Pueblo potters have adopted the ancestral Tularosa pottery designs since the mid-twentieth century. They innovate and create rather than copy Tularosa designs but the influence is obvious.
This large pottery jar was constructed from traditional Acoma clay and the design applied with traditional vegetal pigment. The design field was first divided into two horizontal segments—lower body and shoulder area. Each of these were subdivided into three segments. The designs in the three lower segments are repetitive as are those around the shoulder. The shoulder design is a mirror-image of the body design.
Florence B. Aragon (b.1929) specializes in intricate Tularosa designs and has certainly mastered the technique beautifully. She has earned many awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, New Mexico State Fair, and the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial.
