Alternate view of this storyteller figurine.Acoma Pueblo artist Marilyn Henderson Ray certainly captured all the charm imaginable in this pottery storyteller figurine made in 1993.  Here, the adult female has a charming face as she hosts a variety of kids, animals, pottery, and insects.  There are six children—three boys and three girls— a charming dog, two birds, a butterfly, and two pottery vessels.  The three boys are being mischievous while the three girls are being cheerful.  The dog is getting a drink of water from the canteen held by the boy, one girl is approaching the butterfly while the other girl is tickled at having a bird on her head, and a bird rests on the head of the adult while being ignored by the boy.

Marilyn Henderson Ray (b.1954) artist signature.Marilyn Henderson Ray (b.1954) is the most lively and bubbly person I have ever met.  When she would come to the gallery in Albuquerque with pottery to sell, the whole gallery staff gathered around because she was so pleasant to be around.  I have not seen Marilyn in the twenty years we have been in Santa Fe, but I bet she has not changed a bit.

Marilyn comes from a family of successful potters.  She learned from her grandmother, Dolores S. Sanchez, beginning at the age of eight.  Her grandmother gave her a special polishing stone.  She and her grandmother gathered natural clay together. (Schaaf, 2002)
