Pueblo pottery is considered a traditional art—its materials, methods, and styles having been handed down from one generation to the next—but we recognize that there have been innovations and changes over the decades. In some cases, individual potters wanted to express their creativity. In other instances, the Indian trader influenced potters’ output by requesting styles he felt he could sell. Another influence was imported commercial wares that potters adapted to their use.
This fine example of an Acoma Polychrome jar is indicative of the latter influence mentioned above. It is a turn-of-the-century work of exotic type, specifically created to appeal to a Western market, and based on imported glazed wares of commercial manufacture.
With the influx of tourism into the Southwest after 1880, the Pueblo people responded with products made for home and external use. Unlike much of the poorly crafted products intended specifically for the Anglo trade, this large jar is truly exceptional. Formally, the work is superb, from the subtle swell from base to shoulder and to the graceful rim top, the well-balanced sense of form, precisely placed lugs at upper shoulder, to the visual complexities and superb execution of the design elements. This jar is a magnificent example with fine crazing and excellent patina to the white, rag-wiped background slip.
Condition: very good condition. Examination by UV does not indicate any repairs or restoration of any kind.
Provenance: from the family collection of a gentleman from Arizona
