Sarah Garcia was born of a Laguna Pueblo mother (Maria Trujillo) but has spent her adult life as an Acoma potter, probably one of the most prolific potters at the pueblo. She, along with Jessie Garcia, Lucy Lewis, and Marie Z. Chino, was largely responsible for the revival of Anasazi and Tularosa designs on contemporary Acoma wares.
In addition to making magnificent large ollas and bowls, she enjoyed making owl figurines and jugs with human faces, such as this one. This is a globular vessel in the shape of a human head with protruding eyebrows, ears and nose and an open mouth. Fine lines represent hair. Few Acoma potters were as innovative as Garcia.
Condition: The vessel is in original condition with the exception of about 3 very minor spall spots and a couple scratches on the rear.
Provenance: from the collection of Katherine H. Rust
