Margarete Bagshaw, Santa Clara Pueblo

This untitled drawing was created in 1995 by Santa Clara artist Margarete Bagshaw. It appears to have been completed using pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils.  Bagshaw's keen eye for composition and color elevated her work above that of the average artist, and this particular piece is a strong example. The center of the image is occupied by a cluster of interwoven forms, with various shapes and patterns crossing over and into one another. Within this design, the colors are thicker and more opaque than those that appear around the edges, creating a complex foreground element over a wispy, distant background. Bagshaw's color palette is soft and elegant, using cool colors within the primary design and warmer tones in the background. This is a deep, compelling image from a talented and influential artist.

The drawing is signed and dated Margarete Bagshaw Tindel O-je-gi-povi 95 in lower right. It is framed beautifully, with the paper mounted over a fabric backing under Tru Vue conservation glass.
