J. D. Roybal frequently painted individual dancers in small scale, as seen in this pair. There is an Antelope Dancer on top and a Corn Dancer below. A previous owner chose to frame them together.
These were most likely framed in the 1960s, a time when there was no acid-free matboard. There are acid burns around the edges of the paper where the mat has been in touch.
Because the eventual purchaser may wish to frame these two individually, we have chosen not to change the existing mat, but leave that decision to the next owner. The acidic mat does have to be removed to prevent further acid burns to the paper.
Condition: acid burns around edges of paintings
Provenance: A Pair of Antelope and Corn Dancer Paintings Sharing a Frame from the estate of a former client from New York
