In late November or early December the Zunis celebrate Shalako, a reenactment by katsina priests of the creation and migration of the Zuni people. This is a most serious blessing ceremony for the pueblo. The Shalako katsinas are giant–sized messengers of the rain gods; ten-foot tall Shalako Katsinas tower over the other life-size katsinas and religious leaders.
Johnny Secatero, although a Navajo, has presented an excellent rendition of the parade of the participants. His sense of scale and accuracy of detail are standard fare for him. He is a well-respected painter and is very collectible as an artist. His paintings appear is numerous private and public collections. His awards are too numerous to mention here.
The painting is signed in lower right but not dated. It is triple-matted and framed in a silver metal frame and appears to be in original excellent condition.
