Native artisans repeatedly turned to nature for the shapes and forms of the creations, and the butterfly became a popular source of inspiration, particularly among jewelers. This wonderful example of Zuni channel inlay jewelry sits on a simple split band, presenting several types of natural materials. Their arrangement is elaborate, and yet simple, creating both contrast and balance. The abalone body is flanked with color; wings are shell tipped in turquoise, with jet and coral accents. Intricate braided silver form the antennae with silver drops as nodules. This ring is an interesting piece by a talented craftsperson.
