Asunción Aguilar Caté and her sister, Felipita Aguilar Garcia, were, undoubtedly, the finest potters at Santo Domingo Pueblo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Not only did they make exquisite jars of the traditional style of their pueblo, they created a whole new style of decorating that is still admired almost 100 years later.
Asunción Caté mastered the technique of decorating jars using mostly red and black over a cream slip of which only a minimum of the cream was visible. She started this style around 1910 and ceased production around 1914 due to advancing age. Only a few jars of the storage jar size were made. Most of her production was of the water jar size of 12 inches or less. This jar is the largest one known to exist.
It was previously broken in shipment and professionally restored to its current state. The value is still very much present due to the rarity of Aguilar jars of this size.
Provenance: ex. Richard M. Howard Collection.
