Andrew Van Tsihnahjinnie, Diné Artist

Andrew Van Tsihnahjinnie (1916-2000) went through many moods in his career, solidifying a style momentarily, and then turning to something new and utterly different. Almost always his subject matter centered about the life of his people. He was always chameleon-like in his ability to change, in his response to new influences.

Originality was surely one of Tsihnahjinnie’s chief characteristics—originality in subject matter and treatment thereof, and in color. His unconventional palette complemented his delightful imagination in ever-new creations. Violent action, sustained motion, or peaceful inertia—he let the brush follow the mood of the moment.

Here, he reflected the peaceful moment of a young Navajo man slowly plodding along on his blue horse. They do not appear to be harried or worried, but happy to be together. The horse is presented with great elegance in his solid blue color. The overall feel of the painting reflects the tranquility of life on the reservation.

The painting is signed in the lower right corner Tsinajinie. It is undated.

Condition: The painting was delivered to us fully framed and we have not examined it out of the frame, however, it appears to be in original mint condition. It is beautifully double matted with acid-free materials and framed in a simple gold colored wood frame.

Provenance: ex. coll. California collector of Native American art who is now downsizing.
