Dorothy Dunn, art teacher at the Santa Fe Indian School, encouraged her students to paint what they saw around them. Beatien Yazz, one of the last two living pupils of Dunn, did just that utilizing his strong understanding of nature and wildlife to create beautiful, thoughtful works of art. As a boy, Yazz grew up on the Navajo Reservation observing everything around him and committing those images to memory.
The serenity of two deer at rest in their berth comes to life in this black on white piece by Yazz. Notice the subtleties of the deer's eye gently glancing at the pecking birds-nuances that only Yazz, with his understanding of nature could depict.
Condition: The painting is in original excellent condition. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. It is signed in lower right.
Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
