Rabbits are not an uncommon sight on the Navajo Reservation, but for Beatien Yazz, who grew up on the reservation, they were creatures to be objectified in a very special way. His unique eye, which could capture an image in his head-later to be transferred to paper-was keen and gave the appearance that he had a singular relationship with nature, no doubt a result of the appreciation he gained as a boy living amongst the vast reservation's wildlife.
In this painting, the common rabbit is paired with butterflies, a recurring motif in his work, evidenced by a companion piece with squirrels and butterflies (See item #C2989C).
Condition: The painting is in original excellent condition except for a tiny crease in the lower right hand corner. This could be easily matted out. It has never been framed and is currently shrink-wrapped for protection. It is signed in lower right.
Provenance: From the collection of the family of Balcomb's Ranch Gallery, Colorado.
