According to Turnbaugh and Turnbaugh, “Many of the Great Basin peoples made finely coiled baskets that rival exquisite California and Southwest wares. Washo coiled basketry, and most specifically that which Datsolalee fashioned, is very well made and highly prized as a collector’s item.”
This is not a Datsolalee creation, but is a beautifully made basket. It served its owner well for many decades. Most of the pattern is gone and some of the rim is missing. The original design, somewhat visible on the interior, was a scattering of crosses. It’s still a treasure to preserve.
Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship.
