The classic beauty of a crescent-shaped cabochon of Blue Gem turquoise is the focal point of this mid-century Diné ring. Mined near Battle Mountain, Nevada, Blue Gem Turquoise ranges in color from light green to dark blue with every shade in between. Even within a single stone, the variations in color can be from light to dark. In this ring an unknown Diné artist set a multi-shaded stone in a sleek, elegant setting. The only additional elements are two small stamped silver domes on either side of the stone. Diné silversmiths are well known for their ability to use silver as a frame to bring out the beauty of a stone.
The unique shape of the stone reminds one of the shape of a crescent moon. Depending on the direction the ring is placed on the finger, it could be the representation of a new waxing moon signifying new beginnings, or if placed in the opposite direction, a symbol of the waning gibbous moon, representing a time to recharge and prepare for positive change. It is not known if the intent of the artist was to mimic the shape of the moon, but it is a nice way to think about the delightfully shaded, crescent shaped stone set in a classic silver setting. The ring is unsigned and dates from the mid-20th century.
