Ivan Lewis was the son of famous Acoma potter Lucy Lewis. He never made pottery while living at Acoma, only started making it after marrying Rita and moving to her pueblo of Cochiti.
Ivan and Rita were married in 1944 while he was serving in the military. Upon returning from military service, he moved to Cochiti Pueblo where he spent the remainder of his life. Ivan began making pottery in the Cochiti style around 1977. His specialty was figurines, especially cowboys.
This figurine is probably one of Ivan’s earlier pieces, as it is not signed. His later pieces were signed. It is quite possible that it was made in the mid-1980s or slightly later. It is in original excellent condition.
