Frank Patania, an Italian, was an internationally recognized expert goldsmith who had workshops in Tucson and Santa Fe. He employed Native American workers to execute his designs. He did not represent himself as an Indian Trader. His intent was to make sterling silver objects to order.
This ring obviously was made to order. The large S on the face is definitely a monogram “made to order.”
The three-prong split shank is made from heavy gauge silver, as is the rectangular top of the ring. The beautiful, slightly oblong Red Mountain turquoise possesses a magnificent copper matrix.
Stamping on the backside of the ring includes FP (for Frank Patania workshop); the workshop’s Thunderbird hallmark; the initial E (maker’s identification); and the word STERLING
