Scholder, already an accomplished painter and world recognized artist, took on a new challenge in 1970 when he turned to the art of lithography. Scholder had attempted lithography once before as a student but found it much too demanding and labor intensive.
Lithography consists of creating the art piece on a large slab of gray Bavarian limestone, but before this can be done, the stone must be taken to the graining sink and ground by hand with fine carborundum. Each stone must have a perfect surface, free of flaws and scratches—and it takes long, hard hours to achieve this. As a student, Scholder had to do this, but as an artist, an apprentice-printer would do it for him.
Original stone lithographs are printed on one of several handmade papers, specifically made for original works of art. It is much softer and more porous than commercial papers, and the ragged edge on each sheet is characteristic of hand-made paper.
