Once Known Native American Potter

This is truly an extraordinary small bowl that must date to the 1880s. The interior and exterior are completely covered with traditional rag-wiped bentonite slip, there is a black rim around the top, and black double framing lines just under the rim and just below the design area, separating the design from the beautifully deep red underbody.

The main body is decorated in an extremely bold sinusoidal design element that wraps around the vessel. There was possibly an interior design but only remnants of brown paint remain. It is possible that it was a wide brown band extending from the rim down about an inch inside the bowl.

The condition of the bowl is outstanding, considering its age. There are a couple rim chips and some slip loss.
