Once Known Native American Potter

This Santo Domingo Pueblo polychrome serving bowl dates to the 1920s or 1930s. It has the traditional rag-wiped bentonite slip, black rim around the top rolling over the edge, and black framing lines separating the design panel from the rim and underbody.

The main body is decorated in raindrop pattern achieved by outlining the desired design with black paint. Each raindrop is framed in a triangular box.

A ceremonial line break penetrates the entire design field. The interior of the bowl has been slipped in cream clay. A wide red band has been rag-wiped on the underbody.

The interior wear pattern is a testament to many, many years of service as a daily serving bowl for food.

The bowl is in excellent condition. There is a little residue on the undecorated red underbody that looks somewhat like a thin layer of piñon pitch. There seems to be no apparent reason for it as it doesn’t conceal or secure a crack or break.
