This is a fine Santo Domingo dough bowl that follows the pueblo's traditions in every aspect of materials, construction and design. It probably dates to the 1900-1920-time period. The main body is decorated in black vegetal paint over the cream-colored rag-wiped bentonite slip. The design consists of triangles connected to form 6-pointed stars.
The black rim and the double framing lines at the rim are penetrated by a traditional ceremonial break that goes through the entire design element. It does not, however, penetrate the double framing lines near the deep red underbody. I think this is quite unusual, as the ceremonial break usually goes through from top to bottom.
The bowl has a very rich patina, both on the interior and exterior, evidence of much use at the pueblo.
Provenance: Cody, Wyoming Collection.
