A Santa Clara Pueblo potter once told me that firing redware was more difficult than firing the pottery to blackware. She said that the pottery tends to want to take on ashade of black and it is difficult to keep it in a pure state of red. Based on the fact that most potters produce black pottery rather than red, that statement seems to have some validity.

Suazo is accomplished at firing black and red pottery with equal efficiency. This red carved small bowl is a good example of such. Just as she does in her black pottery, she outlines the edges of the deep cuts into the clay with a fine line of matte paint.

The design on this bowl is an array of eagle feathers encircling the bowl about ¾ around the circumference. The remaining portion of the design features sun rays and what are probably clouds.

Condition: The bowl is in original excellent condition

Provenance: ex. coll. Florida pottery collectors
