Rose Cata Gonzales, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Rose Gonzales was born and raised at Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan) Pueblo. She moved to San Ildefonso when she married. She was one of the first potters to introduce carved pottery at her new pueblo. She was equally good at carved blackware and carved redware. She was an innovator and a perfectionist. Her carving and burnishing were spectacular.

Rose also produced Black-on-black designs, as was done on this dish. The matte black painting here reflects traditional pueblo designs. The dish is in very good condition with only a few scratches here and there, but nothing of great significance. It is signed Rose on the underside.

NOTE: In personal correspondence with Richard Spivey, we were informed that Juan Cruz Roybal of San Ildefonso Pueblo, husband of Tonita Roybal, painted designs on the pottery of Rose Gonzales.
