Laura Gachupin was born into a family of artists. Her sister is Maxine Toya, her mother was Marie Romero, and her grandmother was Persingula Gachupin. Her grandmother was her mentor. She also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. She has won many awards for her work, and demonstrated both in and out of state.
This wonderful jar was made in 1975 when she was only 21 years old. It demonstrates clearly how talented she is at forming a vessel and decorating it as well. The long graceful neck converts from a circular shape at its bottom to a square shape at the rim. It is decorated with wonderful stylized birds, floral elements and Sun symbols.
The underside is concave and signed Laura Gachupin Jemez 7/75. The jar is in excellent original condition.
