T. C. Cannon was a bright flame among American Indian artists. He had studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe with equally famous artist Fritz Scholder. He had exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in 1972, and was the first artist ever to be inducted into the National Indian Hall of Fame, an event that occurred in 1988.
The 1972 exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution, entitled “Two American Artists,” presented the works of T. C. Cannon and Fritz Scholder. This was the first opportunity afforded living American Indian artists to exhibit in the heart of the capitol—an honor as high as could be bestowed by the country. Following this exhibit, the works traveled to European capitols under the sponsorship of the Department of the Interior.
In this linocut, Cannon features the American hero, and Native American anti-hero, George Armstrong Custer, and calls him Zero Hero. His scorn for Custer is evident in the image. A linocut is a print from linoleum in which the artist has carved his intended image. This particular image was released in an edition of only 15 copies. This is #11.
This image appeared in the exhibit T. C. Cannon—Native American A New View of the West. This one-man exhibit was shown at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center, September 14 through November 4, 1990. It was exhibited also at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art from December 20, 1990 to March 24, 1991. It is published in the catalog of the two exhibits.
The print is framed in a handmade dark brown wood frame and is ready for display.
