Washo basketmakers made some of the finest examples of baskets made for sale during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Increasing popularity of baskets with collectors and tourists and the encouragement of Abe Cohen who established an emporium to buy and sell baskets were highly responsible.

Materials used in Washo baskets are willow, bracken fern, and redbud. Young willow shoots in their first year are used for rod foundation and sewing strands. Redbud and bracken fern are used in designs.

This basket is in very good condition. There are some broken and missing stitches at the rim, and a half dozen missing stitches at one place on the body, but it is still a treasure to preserve.
