Older tabletas were made from wood that generally was salvaged from shipping crates obtained from the local trading post. More modern ones have been made from plywood. This tableta was made in the old-fashioned manner. For early tablitas, two or more pieces of wood were anchored together by drilling holes and cinching them with rawhide or sinew. This one was fashioned from two pieces of wood.

As for dating the tableta, that is difficult. It is not practical to date the wood. The paint could have been reapplied a dozen times over many decades as the piece was used over and over in dances. It is safe to say that it has some years to its credit, but determining how many is hard to do.

Condition: very good condition with expected wear pattern
