Rose Gonzales was born and raised at San Juan Pueblo. She moved to San Ildefonso when she married. She was one of the first potters to introduce carved pottery at her new pueblo. She was equally good at carved blackware and carved redware. She was an innovator and a perfectionist. Her carving and burnishing are spectacular.
This red jar is as perfect as anyone could make. The shape of the vessel, the sensuous carving of the design, and the stone polishing all contribute to an enviable talent.
The bottom of the jar is signed as follows: Rose to Sister Florence 1973.
Provenance: From a private collection in Munich Germany.
