The desert is filled with many creatures of nature. The Mimbres Indians of Southern New Mexico documented many of them on their pottery a thousand years ago. Lonewolf, in this example, has used the Mimbres lizard image for his design.
The round seed jar is polished black with a circle carved away in which the artist placed the design. The earth colored background with incised lines easily represents the desert sands. The wide-eyed lizard, in polished red slip, seems at home on the sand.
The jar is signed Joseph Lonewolf, and has his wolf’s head hallmark, the number 56A, and the year 1973. It is in excellent condition.
A copy of the book The Pottery Jewels of Joseph Lonewolf,(click here to view details of book) First Edition, is included with the purchase of this piece of pottery.
