This is a very nice small serving bowl from Zia Pueblo, created most probably in the 1920s. This fine piece was coil-formed of native clay with the addition of crushed basaltic temper. The underbody bare paste was stone-polished to a warm brick red color. The design field was slipped in a creamy white slip over which was painted the design.
This is a fantastic work of art. It is very awarding to see a potter exert such love and care in making and decorating such a small piece with all the care she would use in making a major dough bowl. The design elements are faithful to the traditionally conservative Zia design system, which itself is relatively unchanged by the influence of Western ideas.
The interior polish is flawless and a beautiful deep brick red color. There is a¼-inch wide red band wiped on the interior just below the black rim. There is some wear evident on the interior, evidence of actual use at some point in its life. The exterior has assumed a wonderful dark patina from years and years of daily handling by hand.
There is a hairline crack at one point, but it is not significant. Overall, this is a beautiful and charming small bowl that has had loving care and use for many years.
