Once Known Native American Potter

This is a wonderful Tesuque polychrome bowl exhibiting traits of late-period Tesuque ceramics. The paste is very typical Tewa material, tan in color and fibrous in texture, with some crystalline sand grains as usual in Tesuque pottery.

The interior is slipped with cream-colored clay and then stone-polished. Applied over the slip is a major element of decoration consisting of a plant-like element, with seedpods, in the bottom of the bowl.

A red rim top completely encircles the fluted rim, as do double framing lines, both of which exhibit ceremonial breaks. The lower framing line is scalloped to represent clouds, and from these clouds raindrops fall. The exterior is unslipped, with the natural tan-colored clay exhibiting the bumpy polish that is a distinguishing trait at Tesuque. The bottom is flat. The bowl is in excellent condition.
